Touring Information
In addition to the company's 15-17 week resident season in San Francisco, Mountain View, Walnut Creek and Carmel Smuin Ballet also tours nationally and internationally 2-4 weeks each year. Recent tours have included: Italy, New York, Vail, Hawaii, South Dakota and Montana.
Particularly well-suited to tour with a classically-trained troupe of just 16 dancers, Smuin Ballet offers a broad repertoire of more than forty works by founder Michael Smuin. Ballets range from those set to popular music such as Sinatra tribute Fly Me To The Moon and Dancin' With Gershwin… to more classical works such as Symphony of Psalms set to the music of Stravinsky… to one-act story ballets with intense theatricality such as Medea and the mambo ballet Frankie & Johnny. No ballet company offers more variety, from ballet on pointe to tap and Broadway show numbers, often within the same program! An evening with Smuin Ballet is always entertaining and full of surprises.
Smuin Ballet has more than forty works by Tony and Emmy Award-winning choreographer Michael Smuin in its repertoire. Among the ballets currently being featured on tour are:
Fly Me To The Moon
Premiered in 2004 and playing to capacity crowds, Fly Me To The Moon is Michael Smuin's tribute-in-dance to Ol' Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. This one-act ballet features the smooth and stylish melodies that have inspired generations, including The Way You Look Tonight, That's Life, The Lady is a Tramp, and more.
Dancin' With Gershwin
Available both as a one-act and full-length ballet, Dancin' With Gershwin is a shamelessly entertaining celebration of George and Ira Gershwin's music with unforgettable original recordings by Marilyn Monroe, Michael Feinstein, Nat King Cole and more.
To The Beatles, Revisited
This one-act ballet is a hip, entertaining celebration of the most influential and beloved group in the history of pop, set to the Fab Four's immortal recordings. From bravura acrobatics to moments of enlightened stillness, this ballet visits the many moods of the Beatles and their history-altering music.
