This world premiere ballet, choreographed by Artistic Director Amy Seiwert, debuted as part of Dance Series 2 in Spring 2025.
Writing in the San Francisco Chronicle, Steven Winn said of I Remember Now:
“. . . A universe of human feeling and community unfolds in I Remember Now, a tender and transporting ballet by Amy Seiwert in its world premiere at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts’ Blue Shield of California Theater.
Composed in seven movements, the piece makes full use of the Smuin Contemporary Ballet company in various configurations to explore the ways we yearn and strive to connect in a ravishing, fragile world. In one recurring, poignant gesture, a dancer lightly places a hand on another’s chest, as if to say: Be well. Be careful. Know that I’m here.
There’s so much to attend to in Seiwert’s fully conceived and finely detailed choreography that almost any segment can stand in for the richness of the whole. Take for example one trio, danced with a concentrated sense of purpose by Tessa Barbour, Dominic Barrett and Yuri Rogers on opening night, which felt like a fresh invention of interlocking cooperation. While one might wish that I Remember Now would end with something stronger than the too-easy hoist of a hug, the piece makes a viewer want to push the rewind button and take it in all over again.”
